Hancock County, Indiana is centrally located in the state, north east of Indianapolis.  Named after President of the Continental Congress John Hancock, Hancock County was formed county in March 1828. Greenfield was named county seat in April 1828.  The county has retained its original borders since that time. 


Hancock County is composed of 8 incorporated towns (Cumberland, Fortville, Greenfield, McCordsville, New Palestine, Shirley, Spring Lake, and Wilkinson) that are served by 4 school districts (Southern Hancock County, Eastern Hancock, Greenfield-Central, and Mt. Vernon) and a number of private and parochial schools.  


The population estimate in 2019 was 78,168 residents at a density of 249 residents per square mile. Out of a total area of 307.02 square miles, 1.01 square miles are water.  The median household income is $47,697 and the median age is 39.1 years. Hancock County is part of Indiana’s 5th Congressional District, Indiana Senate district 28, and House of Representatives districts 29 and 53.


Interstate 70 and several US Routes and State Roads run through the County.  As of January 2022, there were 12 listings on the National Register of Historic Places located within the County
