Johnson County, Indiana is centrally located in the state, just 10 minutes south of Indianapolis.  Named after Indiana Supreme Court Justice John Johnson, Johnson County was formed in 1823. Franklin is the county seat and Greenwood is the largest city.


Johnson County is composed of 8 incorporated cities and towns (Bargersville, Edinburgh, Franklin, Greenwood, New Whiteland, Princes Lakes, Trafalgar, and Whiteland) that are served by 6 school districts (Center Grove, Clark-Pleasant, Edinburgh, Franklin, Greenwood, and Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson United) and a number of private and parochial schools. 


The median household income is $47,697 and the median age is 36.8 years.  The population estimate in 2019 was 158,167 residents at a density of 436 residents per square mile.  With a mixture of suburban and rural landscapes, Johnson County has a total area of 321.79 square miles, of which 1.36 square miles are water.  The south end of the county is home to the Camp Atterbury military installation. 


Interstate 65, US 31, and several State Roads run through the County.  As of January 2022, there were 21 listings on the National Register of Historic Places located within the County including a number of historic churches, homes, schools, and districts. Johnson County is part of Indiana’s 9th Congressional district, Indiana Senate districts 36, 37, and 41, and House of Representatives districts 47, 58, 65, and 93.
